Leafy Bullet *Bahreyn Leafy Bullet
AHR #603

Color: Rich Dark Bay (Almost Seal Brown)
Sex: Mare
Foaled: 1924

Sire: *Rizvan (Ibn Yashmak x *Rijma by Rijm)

Dam: *Battla (Razaz x Bukra by Ahmar)

Breeder: Crabbet Arabian Stud. Sussex, England

Imported by W.K. Kellogg. Pomona, California. 1926.

Dam of 5 registered purebred Arabian foals (3 colts and 2 fillies) including her son Ronek, a stallion of significance mid-pedigree in the foundation bloodstock of  Arieana Arabians.

From our Arieana Notebook: *Bahreyn, imported from England as a two-year-old, was long remembered by those who knew her for her lovely action at the trot. She was also noted as a hot-tempered little mare with close-set ears that almost touched at their tips by Gladys Brown Edwards in her book The Arabian: War Horse to Show Horse, adding that *Bahreyn was worthy of most note as being the dam of Ronek and had tail female descendants and champions through two of her daughters sired by *Ferdin (p.73). Another of *Bahreyn's sons, Count Potocki (a full-brother to Ronek), was gifted by W.K. Kellogg to California Governor Rolf who used him solely as a riding horse. Herbert H. Reese in his book The Kellogg Arabians mentions that *Bahreyn, after showing much promise for being one of the best broodmares in the Kellogg Ranch herd, broke her leg in an accident and had to be destroyed ~ a serious blow to the Kellogg Ranch breeding program. (p. 119).

Of special interest is that *Bahreyn was actually bred here in the United States by W.R. Brown of the Maynesboro Stud; her dam *Battla was re-purchased by Lady Wentworth and shipped back to England in foal to *Rizvan producing the resulting filly *Bahreyn in England. This happened during an era both here in the United States and in England when the actual owner of the mare at the time of foaling was considered the breeder and, such as we see here, the studbooks indicate *Bahreyn's breeder to have been Crabbet Arabian Stud instead of W.R. Brown.

This is the only photo of *Battla available to us.
We believe the headstall was fitted too tightly
and has distorted the shape of her mouth.

From our Arieana Notebook: *Battla, an extreme beauty as a foal, was 3 years old at the time of her importation by W.R. Brown. A lovely dappled grey at 5 years old, she was praised for her action at the trot and noted as "lady broke to ride and drive." After many years of negotiations, Lady Wentworth was eventually able to re-purchase *Battla, and in March 1924 *Battla was shipped back to Crabbet in foal to *Rizvan producing her American-bred filly *Bahreyn in England. It is noted *Battla was destroyed in 1935, age 20.
