*Ferda

Leafy Bullet *Ferda Leafy Bullet
AHR #596
(GSB #625)

Color: Bay
Sex: Mare
Foaled: 1913

Sire: Rustem (Astraled x Ridaa by Merzuk)

Dam: Feluka (Mesaoud x Ferida by Desert Bred)

Breeder: Lady Wentworth. Crabbet Arabian Stud. Sussex, England.

Imported by W.K. Kellogg.
Pomona, California. 1926.

Dam of 15 purebred Arabian foals (8 colts and 7 fillies) as registered both here in the United States and in England, of which her sons Ferdilan, *Ferdin, and Ferseyn, and her daughter *Farasin are all of special significance mid-pedigree in the foundation bloodstock of Arieana Arabians.

From our Arieana Notebook: *Ferda was imported by the Kellogg Ranch in 1926 at the age of 13. Her daughters *Farasin by Rasim and *Ferdisia by Rafeef were imported with her. She carried en-utero her fine son, *Ferdin, and he was the first of her foals born here in the United States. *Ferda was of exceptional reproductive and constitutional soundness and hardiness and produced nine more foals in the United States in addition to the previous six foals she already had produced in England. Based on the superb quality of her foals, most of whom were retained by the Kellogg Ranch for their own breeding program, *Ferda became known as the "Queen of Kellogg." By 1937, 50% of the horses at Kellogg's were related to her in some way. (Reese, Herbert H. in collaboration with Gladys Brown Edwards. The Kellogg Arabians ~ Their Background and Influence. Borden Publishing Company, Alhambra, CA. 1958. pp. 131-133.)

In 1936, the then aging *Ferda was sold to Fred E. Vanderhoof of Woodlake, California. She was in foal to *Raseyn at the time and produced *Ferseyn in 1937. *Ferda was then sold to Paul H. Mohnike of Lindsay, California in 1938; to Donald Jones of Porterville, California in 1939 and in whose ownership she died in 1939 sometime shortly after producing her last foal Ferd by El Kumait. (Parkinson, Mary Jane. The Kellogg Ranch, The First Sixty Years. Cal Poly Kellogg United Foundation, Inc. California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, CA. Third edition 1984. p. 505)
