From our Arieana Notebook: Ghazil was noted as a very beautiful mare with a lovely fine head, reflecting that special stamp of quality *Abu Zeyd put on his daughters for good riding horse conformation combined with an exquisite, dry, extreme, antique Arabian type. During her lifetime Ghazil was owned by E.W. Hassan of New York and General J.M. Dickinson (Travelers Rest) of Franklin, Tennessee. Ghazil is the only daughter of *Hamida to breed on into modern pedigrees, and we at Arieana Arabians highly value this rare and unique source of Bint Helwa blood as it comes down to us through her daughter Hawija.

AHR #278

Color: Grey
Sex: Mare
Foaled: March 22, 1914
Markings: Blaze. Near fore sock extending up front of leg.
Height: 14.2 Hands
Weight: 950 lbs.

Sire: *Rodan (Harb x *Rose of Sharon by Hadban)

Dam: *Ghazala (Ibn Sherara x Bint Helwa by Aziz)

Breeder: Colonel Spencer Borden. Interlachen Stud. Fall River, Massachusetts

Double Registered with The Thoroughbred Jockey Club as No. 80753 in their American Stud Book.

Dam of 12 registered purebred Arabian foals (7 colts and 5 fillies) of which her son Gulastra holds a very special place of influence on the tail male sire line in the breeding program of Arieana's Arabians (see Rahas).

Line Break

From our Arieana Notebook: Gulnare, a dynastic mare of the highest distinction with many outstanding foals to her credit, will long be treasured here at Arieana Arabians as the dam of Gulastra, the greatest progenitor of the Mesaoud sire line in the United States.

A most well-bred mare of illustrious pedigree and a maternal half-sister to Guemura, Gulnare had three special owners in her lifetime. The first was her breeder Spencer Borden for whom she had 1 foal. Borden then sold her sometime between 1917 and 1921 to W.R. Brown for whom she had 7 foals, including Gulastra, a stallion of major significance in our pedigrees through his two sons Rahas and Balastra. Then sometime between 1930-1931 Brown sold Gulnare to General J.M. Dickinson (Travelers Rest) for whom she had her remaining 4 foals.

General J.M. Dickinson, in the 1934 edition of his Travelers Rest Farm catalogue, wrote: "Gulnare possessed unmistakable Arabian character of the finest elite type. She had a deep body of desirable width, especially through the shoulders, chest, and barrel. She was well ribbed up, compact, and her tail set high and carried in an arch. Her head was of unforgettable beauty with its delicate ear, large eye, and tapering finish." (p. 49).

Just as General Dickinson treasured his "G" mares and their descendants, the name and valued influence of Gulnare and her sons and daughters are today still treasured and sought after in the purebred pedigrees of Arieana Arabians and throughout the world.

Of special note and interest is that the Bint Helwa dam line itself eventually died out at Crabbet, though at times Lady Wentworth made great effort to revive it. But through the Gulnare daughter Gayza (x Bazleyd) and the Gulnare granddaughter Gara (Gharifet x Bazleyd) this highly-valued Bint Helwa mare line was returned to England where it successfully bred on and is still found and valued there today.
