From our Arieana Notebook: In 1932, after becoming enamored with the capabilities of Arabian horses to outlast other breeds during an Endurance race, Henry B. Babson traveled abroad to obtain Arabians ~ befriending Dr. A.E. Branch, manager of the Kafr Stud Farm in Egypt. Through Dr. Branch's help, Babson acquired seven Arabian horses: two stallions and five mares from Egypt's royalty. Following the purchase of these horses, the Babson Legend took root.

*Maaroufa, one of the mares of this importation, became the favorite of Henry B. Babson. At the time of *Maaroufa's importation, she was just a yearling, and her portrait photo on this webpage captivates us just as she herself must have captivated him. Mr. Babson's daughter, Elizabeth Babson Tieken, wrote in the book referenced below: "She was his favorite. *Maaroufa was typy and beautiful, but he wouldn't have been pleased with her had she not been a good broodmare.... When *Maaroufa died in 1960, it was considered the end of an era."

For further reading and study on *Maaroufa and these Old Egyptian bloodlines, recommended reading is: The Royal Arabians of Egypt and The Stud of Henry B. Babson by Judith Forbis and Walter Schimanski. Thoth Publishers, Waco Texas 76710. 1976.

And for those of you with interest in these things, *Maaroufa does qualify as a CMK mare as she was imported to North America pre-1950. By tail female, *Maaroufa descends on the same Bint Yamama dam line that W.R. Brown established for his Maynesboro Stud with his importation at the same time of *Roda and *Aziza, both daughters of Negma, and *H.H. Mohammed Ali's Hamama and *H.H. Mohammed Ali's Hamida, both out of the famed Negma daughter Mahroussa. For a complete list and overview of these dam lines, see Rick Synowski's article on The Original Crabbet/Maynesboro/Kellogg Mare Families

From our Arieana Notebook: Mahroussa was practically a legend in her own time. Her beauty was the ideal of many Arab enthusiasts, and she was one of the most photographed Egyptian mares of that era. Mahroussa was also prolific in the stud and consistently passed on her quality and type to her foals. W.R. Brown, owner of Maynesboro Stud, called Mahroussa the most beautiful mare he had ever seen. (The Royal Arabians of Egypt and The Stud of Henry B. Babson by Judith Forbis and Walter Schimanski. Thoth Publishers, Waco, Texas 76710. 1976. p. 40.) Mahroussa is treasured by us at Arieana Arabians as the dam of *Maaroufa and perhaps a source for us through her dam Negma of that elusive recessive black coat coloration we've seen express itself in the foal coat coloration of our two fillies by Blitzen of Pico.
