From our Arieana Notebook: Stambul was a highly valued sire in the U.S. Remount Service for his beauty and athletic ability, his own sire El Sabok having been a winning endurance horse.

Nyla Eshelman, in posting to the PBArabHorsePics-LTD mailing list on November 4, 2003, recalled these memories of him: "Stambul belonged to the United States Government Remount Service, and was stalled at Salem, Oregon, in the care of Gladys Brown Edward's father-in-law. When mares were in season their owners called Mr. Edwards and made an appointment. He would tell the mare owner to gather other persons who had mares also in season. He would then load either Stambul, or his other Remount stallion, the Thoroughbred, Lawrence M., into a truck and take them to the appointed place. The stud fees were $10.00 per mare. The object of the Government was to improve horses all over the area with these fine stallions. Stambul had great, dark understanding eyes and silver flaring nostrils. He was white as the snow and had a proud, regal bearing. He was a very kind horse and liked the children who gathered around, and in between breedings the children got to take turns riding Stambul; that was every half-hour. They rode bareback and [with] an easy bit and he moved so smoothly that he seemed to float. His rider barely had to touch the reins."
