Heads-Up!
Latest News on
West Nile Virus
|
|
As of today, August 6, 2005, the dreaded West Nile Virus within our equine population here in California has been confirmed in
86 horses in 17 counties, 24 of which have died or been euthanized. This is
a very serious situation for us here in Southern California, especially
right now in Kern, Orange (a human case), Riverside, and Santa Barbara Counties, and we
encourage you to vaccinate your horses and maintain their boosters as
their first-line of self-defense. And please do all you can to clean-up
any areas in your surrounding environments where those dreaded mosquito
vectors can breed; we desperately need to eradicate this at its source!
For more information on the
West Nile Virus and the preventative measures you can take to help, please visit the website at the University
of California at Davis's Center for Equine
Health or the California
Health Department's West Nile Surveillance website
which is updated twice weekly.

OB Haat Lipz wins
the hearts of the crowd at Del Mar
|

|
"Scheduled as part of the
festivities of the San Diego County Del Mar Fair on Sunday, June 12, 2005, the San Luis
Obispo Mounted Sheriff's Posse gave a demonstration of their
horsemanship and crowd control skills at a California Mounted
Officers Association Extreme Trail Trial.
The crowd favorite? OB
Haat Lipz (Blitzen of Pico x Arribas Pride) with Captain Bill
Obermeyer aboard. Isn't this CMK mare just incredible with her
beauty and her many skills and talents?
We have several more
photos we'd like to share with you of our experiences that day; contact us if you'd like to see
more of this awesome mare in action."

"We're having a
busy, exciting year at Pegasus Park Arabians with lots of exciting news to share ~
Cal Poly has booked three 2005 breedings to
FV Sharabba. After having their two FV Sharabba foals born this year (a colt and a filly), the
"Committee" has decided they want more. Mares to be bred are FV Aur Rosetta (Aur Patriot x Flash Angel by
Farlane), Farletta (Ibn Farlane x Muhuli daughter),
and FV Canadian Melody (Canadian Salute x Farlane daughter).
El Shama (Aulrab x
Aurieha) will be in residence at Pegasus Park beginning June 18, 2005. Shama will be here for 1-2 months while we train him for AI for
Jim Hopkins, his owner. While here, we will breed at least one of our mares. If anyone wants to take advantage of the opportunity of Shama being "in
town", I'm sure Jim would love to hear from you ~ Phone: 760-367-6615 or e-mail: jhopkins@cmccd.edu. (Photo of
El Shama, courtesy of Marci de la Torre, taken May 1, 2005.)
SX Staleys Gemini (*Serafix x Neecheza) will celebrate his 32nd birthday on July 12, 2005. He looks and feels great. I have attached a picture taken
at his 30th birthday party. Photo credit Carol Mingst. We believe that
"Gem" is the last living *Serafix son."

Debi Norris of Reagal
Arabians has written
to share this wonderful news: "RVA Dream
Deelite (Dreamazon x Franie by Ferbeyn) at 22 years old won the Aged Mare Class
(15 & Over), the Fezahna Perpetual Trophy, and the Most Classic Head
Class last weekend at the
Sierra Empire Show (April 16th-17th). Poor
gal wasn't too happy about missing her beauty sleep, so I promised
her 'No More Shows'.
This was our first time in the ring in several years, and we are
so very proud of her."

OB Haat Lipz to the
Rescue
|
"I'm hoping you will enjoy this photo of Captain Obermeyer and OB
Haat Lipz of the San Luis Obispo Sheriff Posse taking a quick breather on a Search and Rescue for two missing persons at Montana
De Oro State Park in Los Osos, CA on February 5th. The search started at 5:30 AM and the
individuals were found at 11:48 AM, cold but otherwise in fair condition.
They had been lost since the previous day. Of interest is the halter
our horse is wearing which has snap bit attachments and the lead rope which has
a quick release that goes around the neck so that we can dismount and lead a horse
quickly."

April
21, 2005: Trails Expert to Speak
|
|
Noted author, educator, and trails expert Jerry Schad will present a slide-illustrated program entitled "Off the Beaten Track: Exploring the
Wilds of the Cleveland National Forest" at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center on Thursday, April 21, 2005. A
reception, open to all, begins at 7 p.m. with the program following at 7:30.
There will also be a brief tribute to John Muir, founder of the Sierra Club
and whose birth date was April
21st, in addition to an update on simple actions we can all take to better protect the Santa Ana Mountains and our
Southern California Forests from the many threats they face. Admission to
the event is Free.
Jerry Schad will share with you the
best, and often little-known, back country trails and hikes in the nearby Santa Ana Mountains and in other ranges to the south, from upper San Mateo Canyon, the best preserved stream in the
Santa Anas, to
wildflower-carpeted Laguna Meadow, at a mile-high elevation east of San Diego. Jerry Schad is the author of nine books on outdoor recreation and a
recognized trails expert. His "Afoot and Afield" book series are the standard references for trails and hiking in the Southern California. He is currently preparing a new edition of "Afoot and Afield in Orange County,"
which includes the Cleveland National Forest's Trabuco Ranger District. In
addition to scouting Southern California's trails and wild places, Jerry teaches astronomy and physical science at San Diego Mesa College and chairs the Physical Sciences
Department.
The San Juan Capistrano Community Center is located at 25925 Del Avion, San Juan
Capistrano, just a few minutes from the Ortega Highway exit on I-5. For
more information and detailed directions please contact John Monsen at 213-387-6528 x

forest lands, visit the Sierra Club's Santa Ana Mountains Task Force
website.
